Manufacturing sector will lead economic recovery, says experts

An expert from the banking sector has announced that the manufacturing sector is at the forefront of the country's economic recovery.

Dennis Turner, chief economist at HSBC spoke to event industry hopefuls at the Grass Roots Meetings Industry Forum at London's Hilton Tower Bridge Hotel. Joined by professionals from tourist board Visit London and the Greater London Authority's (GLA) head of London 2012, Mr Turner urged event professionals to maintain focus on the manufacturing industries.

Badge manufacturer, car and marine industries were all attributed to be leading the UK recovery with Turner urging those from the event and marketing sectors to embrace manufacturing.

Describing the industry as 'under-recognised' he added that manufacturing and technology-based industries could make the UK the most affluent economy in Europe in less than ten years. Encouraging increased investment and exports was key to this fast-paced success, according to the banking specialist.

The Forum encouraged both the event and manufacturing industry to work together, promoting one another's successes. From parties to conferences and networking events, Turner believes promotion is key to the recovery.

Speaking to Conference and Incentive Travel, Jeremy Buckle, Engineering UK's event director, echoed Turner's comments, saying: 'There is a huge skills gap in the manufacturing sector. We are in a brave new world when it comes to events.'
